Advancing the European information society decreases emissions as immaterial production grows at the expense of the material production, thus supporting the ecological development strategy of Europe. Sustainability is also a theme, in which values, ethics and moral challenges of the everyday are discussed. In the information society of today, the essential questions and the fundamental field of development lie in the relationship between man and technology.
The European Institute for a Sustainable Information Society aims to become a major actor in the research of sustainable information society in Europe in the coming years. The Institute takes notice of the special research and development interests of the Baltic Sea area (environmental issues, logistics, regional cooperation, cultural exchange, promotion of "Baltic Sea Dimension") Developing sustainability in the Finnish information society enables Finland to maintain its position as a leading global information society.
